Musings about fun between my legs

On my way….sort of

Monday, February 25:

The morning was spent with last minute errands; we were actually ready more than half an hour before son Tim came to pick us up. Flight was on time departing, and arriving in Phoenix. It is hard to imagine that I won’t be back in Indy until almost Mother’s Day! Met at the airport by longtime friends Warren and Sandy, then Mexican food dinner, of course.

Tuesday, February 26:

Promptly at 10 am picked up my bike from Southwest Bicycles, literally across the street from our hotel – unplanned convenience. With Don and Warren to do all the work, I could just supervise and give instructions (I’ll surely get my hands dirty over the next 2 months).

While Don went to a Cactus League ball game and to a driving range, Warren and I went out for a ride. Warren is recovering from a bike accident in November and is just back out on the roads – fine with me as I have been off the bike for a week, and just want saddle time. Roads are mostly flat in Phoenix area, many bike lanes, and we wandered north, stopping to check out this longhorn steer. Found out his name is Boss – I would definitely take orders from him!

Wednesday, February 27:

While Warren had physical therapy and Don played golf, I went biking with a group from the Southwest Bicycle Club. These are friends of Warren’s, and once he gets his strength back, he’ll ride with them on Mondays and Wednesdays. Great fun with “the boys”. We cut the ride a bit short due to the wind, but wandered south past Lucas Air Force, then parallel to I-10. They even figured a return route to take me back to Warren’s – 35 miles.

Meet Yoshi, Jerry, Gene and Howie – and plenty of Phoenix sun.

Back at Warren’s, he was ready to ride, so we headed back out for another 28 miles, this time with a few hills, up Jomax Road. I even did a loop up and over a crest with some fancy homes. It is especially fun to stop at Paradise (Cafe) for a cookie and lemonade along the way.

Warren is my oldest biking friend – we met in the early 90s, first at a ride he led called PSFBYL (Put some fun between your legs), then on TRIRI, the Ride in Rural Indiana, where he befriended my son Tim and we linked up at the campsites. Over the years, we have taken week-long bike trips, helped each other through surgeries, and generally enjoyed each other’s company, especially on the bike. It seems so natural to be biking together – and great fun!

Metric century for the day: 63 miles! Am I prepared for the miles ahead?

Prelude to my ride

This week seems like the prelude to my ride:

On Monday, I took my last cycle fitness class (I began those in late October). This last class I sprinted hard for 3 minutes ten times, with a 3 minute rest in between. Saw some pretty elevated heart rates!

Tuesday, after 7 am Boot Camp (more sweating and lots of quad exercises) – and a shower, I helped pack my bike to have it shipped to Phoenix (wind chill here in the single digits, hoping to find warmer temps in AZ).

For inspiration, on Wednesday, I had brunch with Willie Weir, in town from Seattle, after returning from a 3-month bike trip in Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia. He reminded me to really listen to the sounds of the road, and see the splendor of the land.

Thursday was my last exercise class at church, lots of arm reps. Everybody wanted to know when I was starting my journey.

The weekend will be spent packing, last minute errands, and good byes to my grand kids (and their parents). While I still have 2 weeks, almost, until my tour begins, the “orchestra” is warming up….

Overwhelmed!

On February 6, I spent several hours composing and sending an email out to a first group of friends, from my bicycle foundation colleagues, and my church “sisters”. I asked for their support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, as I ride across the Southern Tier. Over the next 10 days, as time permitted, I sent emails to others, biking friends, to family, to those on our Christmas card list, more than 100. I mailed snail mail letters to others who don’t have email.

I have truly been overwhelmed by the generosity and the words of encouragement. Yesterday, I received a notice from LLS that I had achieved my goal of $3,100 – and the donations have continued. Needless to say, I am going to increase my goal.
Asking for money is not my favorite thing to do – it seems awkward and embarrassing. But with the results I have received in these two weeks, I realize that “boldness” isn’t bad. People do care – for each other, for those suffering and ill. And the faith that friends have placed in me, to complete this bicycle dream, is truly an incredible incentive to ride strong each and every day.

Thank you all so very much.
