Musings about fun between my legs

Freeport to Rockport, ME: June 9

No photos, just a quick summary of the day:

Overcast skies with rain threatening, and fog.  A little drizzle in the morning, some soft rain early afternoon, but could have been much worse – it did turn cooler when the rain came.  And the hills were manageable, albeit slow to climb.

Our route took us through Brunswick, past Bowdoin College – loved seeing so many bikes in the racks there (abandoned for the summer??).  Had our first sag by the river in Bath, then crossed the Kennebec River and saw a lot of ship building cranes.

We were on and off Route 1 during the day, most of the time with good shoulder.  In Wiscasset, Red’s lobster rolls were recommended but there was already a line before opening and we continued on across the Sheepscott River.

Several riders stopped in Damariscotta, which looked to be a cute little town, but Gail and Marilyn continued on, with Janet B. and Patricia now riding with us as well.

Near Waldoboro, Patricia and I stopped at a sewing/quilt shop while the others continued on – great shop: Maine-ly Sewing.  And then we stopped at Moody’s Diner for soup and sandwich, only to have the rain start while we were inside.

No more stops before Rockport, thankfully the rain stopped but still chilly.  Country Inn is very nice, though weak internet and no laundry!

68.38 miles, 4000 ft ascent.

Rest day in Freeport: June 8

No bike riding today – and sadly no massage.  I hope the rest day means my climbing legs will cooperate better the next 3 days?!

Leisurely breakfast after 8 am, wrote some notes, cleaned my bike, then headed out to explore the shops around 11 am.  No real agenda, and no schedule until evening.

The hotel has afternoon tea – quite a spread – and I caught up with the day’s activities of several of the other riders.  Then it was off to dinner at Linda Evan’s Maine Kitchen with Dick & Margery Sholes – I haven’t seen them for 35 years (are we really that old?!).  Dick used to work with Don at Irving Trust and he also played rugby with Don.  They have lived in Maine for 2 years after 15+ years in Vermont.  Great to see them again!

Guess I came to Maine to catch up with old friends, as well as pedal the miles!!

Kennebunk to Freeport: June 7

Our riding group expanded today as May Toms from CCST13 joined Gail, Wendy, Marilyn B., and I to bike from Kennebunk to Freeport.  We were headed inland, away from the coast, and were warned about hills.  The landscape was quite green, forests,  small farms, few towns (the population of the state of Maine is less than the population of metropolitan Indianapolis).

I am in the lead, followed by Gail, Wendy and May - taken by Marilyn.

Traffic picked up a bit near Sebago Lake, a popular boating location, though it seemed quiet for a Sunday, but the temperatures are still cool.  We had been encouraged to stop at Skippy’s Scoops in Windham, at mile 41.5, only to discover that the ice cream shop didn’t open until noon, and it was 11:45 am.  Our group opted to take a pass and continued on.

Then the hills began and my legs did not want to cooperate.  I was quite slow, and walked one that had a 16% grade.  Luckily Nancy H.’s wife Emilie came along to take photos after I was back on the bike.  We made it to Freeport around 2 pm and ate lunch in the Broad Arrow Tavern before going to our rooms for rest and showers.

No dinner around the circle for me tonight – I enjoyed dinner with Bill Phillips, an Oxy friend, whom I haven’t seen for 30 years!!  Amazing that we have kept in touch – and quick to catch up over a delicious steak.  Then we walked a bit in town; L.L. Bean is the focal point.

63.57 miles today; 3700+ ft of ascent.  2559.74 miles from Fort Lauderdale; 2788.22 miles from Key West.
