March 6:
I have worked for days to figure out the packing… Don and I have taken too many trips in recent years in the minivan where we can “carry everything but the kitchen sink.” I’m not having so much trouble with biking clothes as I am with “other clothes.” While I know my fellow bikers won’t care what I look like each evening, I am thinking of days off, when I’d like to look ‘reasonable.’ I suspect I may be one who has to make some quick last minute decisions when we get our luggage weighed.
Daughter Sarah and grandson Mason arrived near noon, flying in from Seattle – great to see them, and to have them here for my “takeoff.” Brother Parm and sister-in-law Terry arrived in the late afternoon from Portland. We met up for dinner at Anthony’s Grotto on the bay, a longtime San Diego seafood institution.
While everyone was arriving, I was biking from El Cajon to the hotel, through town (and over hills). I wanted to get some last training miles. 20 miles. Sadly, somewhere along the way I lost my cell phone, so Don and I will spend Thursday morning at the Apple Store purchasing a replacement – not a good start…
So the vacation time is ending. I’ll say good by to family and friends Friday morning. It has been wonderful to combine training with visiting. The work of pedaling each day begins, though I will strive to remember to keep it fun. I think my body is as ready as it can be. And my spirit is strengthened by all of the donations and notes of support. Love to all!
