Not as smoky as we got started this morning, and by the end of the ride, we could see blue skies. Traffic was also lighter along US1. Sadly no ocean views today.
After the sag stop at mile 15, we followed the Tomales River to the Tomales Bay – a huge bay. At times, we had a dairy farm on one side of the road and oyster beds on the other.
At mile 30, after a recommended bakery stop in Point Reyes Station, we turned off US1 and began following numbered Bike Routes along rural roads. For 5 miles we were on the Cross Marin Trail bike path, then the campground road in Samuel P Taylor Park – serene forest path.
The big hill of the day was around mile 40, maybe a mile and a half long, slow and steady, then a nice fast downhill into the town of Fairfax. As I turned off the mail road to follow another Bike Route sign, a young man in a car cheered “Way to go” – loves those compliments.
From Fairfax on, we were in urban sprawl. I did enjoy the tony town of San Anselmo with lots of small shops. As I biked into Larkspur, school was being dismissed and there were children everywhere …crossing guards for the elementary kids, and high schoolers wandering every which way. Missed one of the final turns, and when I ended up next to a 6-lane highway, I retraced my route, met up with Pat and Lola, and we found our way to our hotel.
Staying 2 nights at the Best Western in Corte Madera, rooming with Joyce from MN, who joined at Crescent City.
